Women's Synthetic Base Layer

Nothing here absorbs, and that single fact drives the rest. Polyester takes on under 1 percent of its weight in water and polypropylene under a tenth of a percent, so sweat cannot go into the fiber and travels along the outside instead, pulled across the surface by the narrow gaps between filaments until it reaches the face of the cloth and evaporates. Many yarns are extruded with grooved or star-shaped cross sections purely to widen those channels.

Speed is the payoff you can measure. At the same fabric weight, a polyester top dries in roughly half the time a merino one takes, which matters most when you sweat hard and then stop. Strength is the second payoff, since polyester filament resists abrasion far better than fine wool does. So shoulder straps and hip belts do not wear holes in it. Price is the third: two synthetic sets often cost what one merino set does.

Smell is the cost, and it comes from the same chemistry. Polyester attracts oil, so skin oil sits on the fiber surface where bacteria feed on it and produce the odor. A synthetic top usually turns sour by the end of one hard day. Antimicrobial finishes slow it and wash out over a season or two. Dry cold air brings the other nuisance, static, which snaps when you pull a fleece off over your head.

Every one of those trade-offs reverses in a Merino Wool Base Layer. Under a suit sleeve, a Silk Base Layer is quieter and useless at high output. Cotton Waffle Knit Thermals trap more air per gram and then hold water like a sponge. Choose synthetic where output is high, laundry is close, and the layer will meet pack straps, harnesses or a climbing rope.

Judge one by seam and finish rather than by fiber name, since the fibers themselves are much alike between makers. Flatlock seams with no ridge on the inner face are the thing to check first, followed by a hem long enough to stay tucked with your arms overhead. Skip fabric softener without exception and keep the wash cool, because the film softener leaves fills the surface channels the fabric works by. Both fibers melt rather than char, so keep them away from campfires and stove flames; one spark leaves a permanent hole.
