Capacity comes first

Drinking vessels fill this group, and two facts organize all of them. Pressed, blown or machine made

Glass makes up most of the shelf, and the forming method predicts the behavior. Pressed glass is squeezed into a mold, leaving faint vertical seams, thick walls and a low price. Blown glass, by machine or by hand, comes out thinner and lighter with no seam crossing the rim, which rewards a careful household and punishes a careless one. Every piece then passes through an annealing oven, a slow controlled cool that releases the internal stress left by forming, and glass rushed through that stage keeps hidden tension that can split it weeks later with nobody touching it. Composition decides the rest. Soda lime glass, the ordinary kind, expands quickly when heated, so boiling water poured into a cold thick tumbler can crack it down the side. Borosilicate barely expands and takes that same pour calmly, which is why teapots and double wall cups use it. Crystal swaps some soda for lead, barium or zinc, softening the glass so it can be blown thinner and cut deeper for sparkle, then charges for that in scratches and a permanent ban from the dishwasher. Steel bottles run on 18/8 stainless, 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel, which resists rust and carries no flavor between drinks.

Your floor sorts the shelf

Households sort themselves by floor and by traffic. Tile or stone underfoot with children on it argues for tempered everyday glass bought eight at a time, since a break is then a shrug rather than a gap in a set. Carpet, adults and slow evenings make thin blown glass a reasonable pleasure. Three failures, all preventable

Three failures end most drinkware and all three are preventable.   • Measure the upper cabinet shelf before you buy stemware. Most upper shelves clear 10 to 12 inches, a 16 ounce highball stands close to 6 inches. Wine glasses run 8 to 9 inches. Tall stems are the first thing that will not fit and end up living out on the counter.
  • Size the count to your wash cycle rather than your headcount. Two glasses per person per day is the ordinary rate, so a household of four running the dishwasher every other day needs about sixteen everyday glasses in rotation to avoid hand washing one at breakfast.
  • Read printed capacity as brim full and subtract about a quarter. A 12 ounce can or bottle needs a 16 ounce glass to take it in one pour with ice. A glass labeled 12 ounces gives you roughly 9 usable ones.
  • Run a tape across your car's cupholder at the top and compare it with the base diameter the maker lists for a travel tumbler. A base wider than the holder rides loose on the seat, and the drink you bought for the commute becomes the drink you spill on it.
  • Load your tallest glass into the dishwasher before you buy twelve of them. Stems much above 8 inches foul the spray arm on many machines, which commits you to hand washing every single time, and that is a decision better made in the store than in the kitchen.

  • Wash crystal and cut glass by hand on a folded towel rather than in a bare steel sink. Crystal is softer than ordinary glass because of the lead, barium or zinc in it, so it scratches against metal and dulls under dishwasher heat and detergent.
  • Shelve glasses upright on a liner instead of resting them on their rims. The rim is the thinnest part of any vessel, and standing on it puts the full weight of the glass on the edge you drink from.
  • Store insulated bottles with the lid off between uses and pull straws and gaskets apart for a proper scrub. A sealed damp interior grows mildew in the crevices, and the smell carries straight into the next drink.
  • Keep spirits out of a lead crystal decanter for anything longer than an evening. Lead migrates into alcohol over weeks and months, so those pieces are made for serving at the table, not for storage.

How many glasses does a household actually need?

Is crystal really different from ordinary glass?
Yes, and the difference is softness. Adding lead, barium or zinc lowers the melting point. This lets a maker blow thinner walls and cut deeper facets, and that is where the sparkle and the fine rim come from. The same softness scratches in a steel sink and dulls in a dishwasher, so crystal is a hand wash object for life.
Why did a glass crack when nothing hit it?
Two causes explain nearly all of these. Sudden temperature change is the common one, since soda lime glass expands as it heats and a hot pour into a cold thick wall makes the inside grow faster than the outside until it splits. The rarer cause is poor annealing at the factory, which leaves stress locked in the glass that eventually releases on its own.
Can all drinkware go in the dishwasher?

Do I need a different glass for every drink?

Is plastic drinkware ever the right choice?
Outdoors it is the only right choice. Pools, decks and boats keep glass out for good reason, because a break near bare feet ends the afternoon.
