Weekender Diaper Bag

A weekender diaper bag is a duffle of 35 to 50 liters fitted out for a baby: insulated pockets deep enough for several bottles, a full size mat, a wipe clean main compartment and usually a divided end pocket for dirty clothes. Two carry handles plus a detachable shoulder strap come as standard. Packed for two nights it weighs 15 to 25 pounds, and that number decides everything else about how you use it.

Scale changes the job entirely. A bag this large does not come into a cafe with you; it lives in a trunk or a hotel room while something smaller handles the outings. Packing in layers is what makes it work, with sleep kit at the bottom, day clothes in the middle and diapers and feed at the top where you open it. A firm base and a zip running the full length matter more here than pocket count, because you unpack this onto a bed rather than reaching into it standing up.

Put 20 pounds in it in the shop, lift it by the handles, then by the strap, and watch the seams at both anchor points. Handle drop of 9 to 11 inches lets you carry it over a shoulder in a coat, which you will want by the third trip from the car. Zips carry the strain on a bag this size, so look for an 8 or a 10 stamped under the slider rather than a 5. Air it out fully between trips, since a big bag closed on damp clothes goes musty in the middle where you will not notice for weeks.
