Outdoor Smart Plug

A weatherproof shell is the one feature that separates this style from an ordinary smart plug. Commonly rated IP44 or better, it seals every socket with a spring loaded or gasket sealed cover that stays closed around a plugged in cord. Many offer two or more independent outlets so a single unit can run string lights on one schedule and a fountain pump on another. It still has to plug into a standard outlet, so it depends entirely on that outlet already being suitable for outdoor use.

A Smart Plug looks similar but carries no weatherproofing at all and will corrode or short if used outdoors, so the two are not interchangeable despite doing the same basic job. A Smart Switch stays indoors permanently at the wall and cannot be moved outside under any circumstance. This style exists specifically for the gap between them: outdoor, but still a plug rather than permanent wiring.

Seasonal and holiday lights, a garden fountain or pond pump, exterior string lights over a patio and a block heater in cold climates are the common uses. It suits anyone who wants exterior lighting or water features on a sunset to sunrise schedule without running a cord back inside to a manual timer. Skip it for anything that needs to run at a high sustained load, and skip it anywhere the outlet behind it is not itself rated and protected for outdoor use.

Confirm the IP rating explicitly, since IP44 covers splashing water from any direction while a higher rated IP65 or above tolerates direct rain and jets, and match that number to how exposed the mounting spot actually is. Check that the outlet it plugs into is itself a GFCI protected outdoor outlet, since the plug's own rating does not fix an unsafe or unprotected outlet behind it. Look at the cover design specifically, since some only seal when nothing is plugged in and others seal fully around a cord as well.

Check the weatherproof covers each season for cracks, warping or a gasket that no longer seals fully, since a compromised cover voids the protection the rating once offered. Keep the unit off the ground on a stake or bracket where standing water collects after rain, and route any cord in a drip loop below the plug so water travels away from the socket instead of into it. Bring exposed units in ahead of the coldest stretch of winter if the stated operating range does not cover it.
