Floating Locket (Charms & Charm Beads)

Contents on display is the whole idea. A floating locket is a shallow round case with a clear front, holding several very small charms that are fixed to nothing and slide about inside as you move. Photo lockets hide their contents behind solid metal; this one shows the collection and rearranges it every time you turn.

Faces run roughly 20 to 35 mm across, and capacity follows straight from that. A 20 mm case takes three or four minis of 4 to 6 mm, while a 30 mm case takes six to eight. Overfilling defeats the format twice over: the pieces stop floating, and the extra bulk presses the front against its seat until the seal fails or the glass cracks.

Opening happens by hinge, by twist lock or by magnet. Twist locks hold best and cost most. Magnetic fronts open fastest and are the ones that come apart in a bag and quietly empty themselves. What the window is made from matters as much, since mineral glass resists scratching far better than the acrylic used on cheap cases. An acrylic front goes cloudy from ordinary cleaning inside a year.

Weight adds up fast for something that looks light, because a case plus eight minis often passes 15 grams, which asks for a chain of at least 1.5 mm. Charm carriers do the comparable job on the outside of a necklace, holding full size pieces where this holds miniatures. Birthstone minis are the most bought insert, so a floating locket often becomes the family piece that a bracelet would otherwise be.

Test the seal by shaking a closed case beside your ear: a good one is nearly silent because the contents cannot travel far, and a loud rattle means it is underfilled or badly seated. Keep water out completely, as moisture behind glass fogs it permanently and rusts plated minis into a stain nothing lifts. Open it over a tray instead of a sink, since a 4 mm mini vanishes down a drain instantly, and swap contents only a few times a year, because each opening wears the gasket.
