Women's Shaping Slip (Shapewear)

Shaping slips combine two jobs that used to need two garments: a slip that stops a dress clinging and catching, and compression that smooths the shape underneath it. Full versions begin at the bust with straps; half versions begin at the waist and cover the hips and skirt area only.

Control concentrates where it is needed and releases where it is not. The torso section uses firm knit or paneled mesh, then the skirt below opens into looser, slippery fabric, because a compressive skirt would grip the dress and cancel the benefit. Hems are cut straight and finished narrow so they do not print. Some include light cups or a shelf, though most expect you to wear your own bra.

Bodysuits fasten between the legs and so work under trousers and jumpsuits, which a slip cannot do. High-waist briefs stop at the thigh and leave the dress touching your legs. A plain slip with no compression solves cling and static without changing your shape at all. What a shaping slip uniquely provides is a smooth layer that also lets the dress skim rather than stick.

Thin jersey, unlined dresses and anything that clings as you cross a warm room all call for one. Narrow skirts are the exception, since a slip rides up as you walk, making a light gripper hem or a bodysuit the better plan for a tight pencil dress. Summer weddings suit it well, because it adds opacity exactly where a thin dress needs some.

Measure your dress against the slip. The hem has to sit at least an inch shorter, and there is no fixing that on the day. The skirt section should slide over tights instead of clinging to them. Cool hand washing keeps the compression panel working, and hanging it to dry avoids creases, which a shaping panel holds onto once heat has set them in.
