Women's G-String (Panties)

A g-string narrows the back to a single cord no wider than a shoelace, running from the waistband down between the seat and back up the other side. The sides shrink to a thin strap as well, so almost no fabric sits anywhere except the small front panel and the gusset.

A thong keeps a strip of fabric a couple of inches wide at the back, wide enough to sit flat rather than round into a cord. A tanga keeps a small triangle at the back joined by narrow straps at the hip, more coverage than either a thong or a g-string offers. Bikinis keep a full side panel and fully covered seat instead of cutting either away. Set against all three, a g-string is built to leave the least fabric visible under anything close-fitting, which is the entire reason it exists.

Under fabric so thin or so tight that any wider back panel would show, a g-string is the only shape in the drawer that disappears completely. Swimwear-style dressing and close-fitting evening wear are the clearest cases. Comfort is the honest limit, not visible lines, since a cord narrow enough to vanish carries the same tension as a wider strip into far less fabric, and it can be felt all day in a way a thong is not. Many people who own g-strings keep them for specific outfits and wear something wider the rest of the week, and that split is a reasonable way to own one.

Sizing follows hip measurement, the same as every other panty shape, but the margin for error is smaller here, because there is no wider panel to absorb a guess gone wrong. Measure the fullest part of your hips against the maker's own chart. A size down does not make the cord any narrower or more comfortable; it only pulls the existing cord tighter.

A cotton gusset, the separate panel at the crotch, still matters on a g-string even though the rest of the pair is minimal, since that panel is the one part still doing a health-relevant job of taking up moisture. A soft, covered cord sits better against skin than a hard synthetic one, and it is worth checking with your fingers before buying. Wash cold in a mesh bag, since a strap this narrow catches on other clothing and on zips faster than any wider style in the wash.
