Modular Sofas

Repeating units are the format. Each one is a complete small sofa with its own frame, its own legs, its own cushions and upholstery finished on every face. A unit can point in any direction or stand alone as a chair. Widths of 30 to 40 inches with packaging under 30 inches deep mean every piece clears a standard doorway by itself. The shape you order is only the first arrangement rather than the final one.

Clips, hooks and sliding plates under the frames hold neighboring units together, and how firmly they lock is the difference between a sofa and a row of chairs. Cushions run firmer and squarer than on a fixed sofa because each unit has to hold its shape with no neighbor propping it up. You feel the join through the seat, so stretching out across two units puts a ridge under your hip. Covers on most of these unzip and wash, which is why the format follows pets and children around.

The sectional is its nearest sibling, fixing the arrangement, building arms into the end pieces and costing 20 to 30 percent less per seat while having to move whole. A plain three seat sofa costs least of all and holds nothing inside that can fail, at the price of never changing. Deciding between them comes down to how often the furniture has to move. Two house moves usually pay the modular premium back in delivery fees and stairwell disasters alone.

Pay the premium per seat if you live up a walk up, face a tight stair turn, or expect to move every couple of years. Households expecting to grow can buy three units now and a fourth later. Nappers should hesitate, because the seam between units lands somewhere under your body whichever way you lie. Anyone comparing on price alone will lose the argument. A room holding the same layout for a decade has no reason to fund flexibility it will never use.

Push two joined units sideways in the showroom and feel for play, since connectors allowing a quarter inch of movement gap open on a hard floor within a month. Stretch out across the join before buying. Find out how long the line has been in production and whether single units are stocked, because adding a seat in year four only works if the model still exists. Wash every cover on the same schedule rather than spot cleaning one, as fabric fades at a rate you notice only when two pieces sit side by side.
