Deep seating is defined by measurements rather than by shape: a seat 24 to 28 inches from front edge to back cushion, and a cushion 5 to 6 inches thick that compresses under an adult to a seat height near 16 to 18 inches. Sets arrive as a sofa or loveseat, one or two club chairs and a low table, which is a living room moved outdoors.

Cast aluminum and resin wicker over an aluminum frame carry almost all of it, both chosen because they hold that much cushion without rusting under it. What supports the cushion matters more than the arm shape: a strap or mesh deck lets water fall straight through. By comparison, a solid pan holds a puddle under the seat and rots the cushion from below. Modular versions clip units together with brackets so a sofa can become two chairs. This is often the only way a large group gets through a narrow gate. Cushion covers should unzip, and the fabric should be solution dyed acrylic, since this style leaves the most cloth facing the sun.

Conversation Sets are the shallower relative, running 20 to 22 inches deep with 3 to 4 inch cushions. They read as upright where this reads as sunken. Patio Dining Sets sit a foot higher and seat more people in less space. A Chaise Lounger lies flat and serves one person, so it completes this style rather than competing with it.

Patios of 12 by 12 feet and larger are where deep seating stops crowding the walkway. Covered porches suit it best, because a roof over the cushions removes most of the work. Evening sitting rather than outdoor eating is the use case. Anyone with nowhere dry to store six large cushions should look at a sling or slat style instead.

Press a cushion hard at the corner and check that it springs back rather than staying dented, then look underneath for a mesh drain panel and ties that hold the back cushion in place. Hose the frames each month, stand cushions on edge after rain, and give the covers a soft brush wash once a season before they go into a dry box for winter.
