Nightstand Chest

This piece replaces the single drawer of a plain bedside table with three to five drawers. Sizes run 24 to 30 inches wide, 28 to 34 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches deep. Choose the size to match the bed. A pair can hold a useful share of a wardrobe, which may save space elsewhere.

Height comes first and is unforgiving. The top belongs within 2 to 3 inches of the mattress surface, measured with the bedding on, so a half asleep arm finds a glass without lifting a shoulder, and the rule from Nightstands applies here with no discount for the extra drawers. Second comes the gap between bed and wall, since a drawer runs 14 to 18 inches into that gap and a person still has to walk past it. Thirty inches of clearance works comfortably; 24 means turning sideways every night. Depth held to 16 or 18 inches rather than the usual 20 keeps the case off the mattress. Look for a cord notch in the back panel too, because a charger threaded over the top rail gets dragged off the surface within a week.

Plain nightstands run shorter, carry one drawer above an open shelf and display whatever sits on them. Bachelor's chests are wider and built to working height, so they stand too tall beside most beds. Lingerie chests climb past 40 inches and belong against a wall, not a headboard. In a bedroom with no spare wall for a dresser, two of these are often the only folded storage that fits.

Couples buying a pair at once get the match guaranteed and a private drawer each for medication and glasses. Beds sitting high solve a real problem here, since an adjustable base or a thick mattress can push the sleeping surface past 30 inches and strand a standard nightstand well below it. Small bedrooms benefit most of all. Toddlers change the calculation, because a bedside case is exactly what a small child climbs to reach a lamp, so anchor it.

Measure mattress height with the bedding in place, not the bare frame. Check that the top runs at least 16 inches across. So a lamp base under 8 inches still leaves room for a book and a glass. Keep a coaster up there permanently, screw the case to the wall, and open every drawer fully in the store to feel for droop.
