Nursery gliders move on a linked platform base, so the seat slides forward and back in a flat, quiet arc instead of tipping on curved runners the way a rocker does. Long holds are the whole job: night feedings, contact naps, and the hour a sick toddler will spend nowhere but on you.

Pinch points are the safety story, and they differ by mechanism. Under a glider sits a moving metal linkage at exactly the height of crawling fingers and pet tails, which is why a closed or skirted base matters once the baby is mobile. Upholstered swivel gliders add a turn to the slide, which helps you angle toward a crib or a door, and they dominate current nurseries. Reclining gliders let you doze semi-upright through a growth spurt night, at roughly double the price and floor claim.

Padding and arm height decide long-run comfort more than the mechanism does. Arms low enough to rest an elbow while cradling a head, a back tall enough to lean yours against at three in the morning, and covers that unzip for washing all outrank looks. Squeaks in a showroom only grow louder at home, so listen closely before buying.

Nursing and bottle-feeding parents log hundreds of hours here during year one, so anyone planning night feedings should choose it like seating rather than decor and test it with loaded arms. Small rooms can pass entirely, since no rule requires motion and any comfortable chair with arms will do. Bulk is the tax, because the motion arc needs clearance on three sides and the usual ottoman doubles the footprint.
